MENTOR OF THE MONTH – DIANE

DIANE – IN SCHOOL MENTOR

What inspired you to become a volunteer with Big Brothers Big Sisters of Windsor Essex?

The timing was right because I had recently retired and was looking for an opportunity to volunteer. When I read about the BBBS in-school mentor program, I knew immediately that this was what I wanted to do.

What is one memory with your Mentee/Little that still makes you smile?

This is hard to pinpoint too, because there are so many, but I’d say it’s the visit where we walked around the music room, playing a few of the instruments. Letitia lite up when she spotted 6 – 7 on the xylophone, then she gave me a look like, do you know what this is, so just more fun!

What are some of your favourite activities to do with your Mentee/Little?

I have so many favourite activities with Letitia, but if I had to narrow it down, I’d say I love our chats — we always keep each other laughing and smiling. I’ve also enjoyed the times we’ve gotten creative, decorating cookies, making holiday cards, and making bracelets. With these activities, I’m always so impressed by how generous she is, because she’s excited to share what we’ve created with her friends and family. Lastly, we have lots of laughs when playing board games because we have a healthy competitive spirit.

What advice would you give to someone thinking about becoming a mentor with BBBSWE?

I would encourage anyone thinking of becoming a mentor to not hesitate. I truly believe it’s a win-win opportunity. I look forward to my time with Letitia each week because it’s so precious. Then there’s the second win, where I’ve received feedback that I’m making a difference in her life— and this is invaluable!!
