About Go Girls! Go Squad!
Go Girls! Go Squad! – a Group Mentoring program established in 2001 by the Ontario Physical and Health Education Association (OPHEA) in partnership with the Ontario Nurses Association for Big Brothers Big Sisters of Canada. It pairs female mentors with small groups of girl-identifying youth to foster positive relationships and self-esteem. Core Topics of Go Girls! Go Squad! Include physical activity, healthy eating and emotional health including discussions of self-image, bullying, relationships, online safety and others. Currently, Go Girls! Go Squad! is delivered to approximately 300 youth per year in up to 35 schools in Windsor and Essex County. Recent studies on mentoring indicate that the consistent, enduring presence of a caring mentor in a young person’s life can be the difference between staying in school or dropping out, making healthy decisions or engaging in risky behaviours, realizing one’s potential or failing to achieve one’s dreams. Mentors can make a profound difference in the lives of their mentees — and in turn strengthen our communities and the economy.
